Draft · pending legal review

This is a working draft. It has not been reviewed by a lawyer and will change before it is final. It is not legal advice.

Current status: the content is live, but the site is not open to search engines yet. There are 61 Chinese and 134 English jokes, each with a recorded source (Chinese entries cite the platform they circulated on; English entries cite their historical publication). Public mode is still off: every response carries X-Robots-Tag: noindex and robots.txt disallows crawling. Placeholder content is at zero; copyright and compliance review is still required before indexing is enabled.

About GlobeJoke

Last updated 2026-11-06

GlobeJoke is a small bilingual collection of jokes: Chinese humor on one side, English-language humor from around the world on the other. This page is the short version of what we are doing, what we deliberately do not do, and who to talk to.

Why this exists

A joke is one of the cheapest ways for two strangers from different places to discover they laugh at the same thing. We collect jokes that travel, keep them short, and show them without a feed engineered to keep you scrolling.

This is not a content farm and not a growth experiment. There are no accounts, no comment threads and no recommendation engine. The site exists to give you two or three good laughs and let you get on with your day.

Product principles

  • Relaxing, not infinite. The list is finite and it ends ("That's all for now"). No infinite scroll, no autoplay, no pop-up or interstitial ads.
  • Every joke names its source. Each card shows where the joke came from and, where we have one, the reference. An item with no traceable origin does not go up.
  • The punchline stays hidden until you ask for it on cards and the daily pick: one tap reveals it. On a joke's own page it is visible, because that page exists for people who already chose to read that joke. Explanations are optional, never required reading.
  • No accounts, no ad trackers. Votes are counted on our own server under an anonymous hash (see Privacy). There is no advertising network, no social pixel and no cross-site profile.
  • Quiet by default. Text first, no autoplay video, and a bedtime mode that turns every animation off.
  • Takedown first. If something here is yours and you want it gone, we remove it first and sort out the details afterwards.

Where the content comes from

Every published joke carries two machine-checked fields: source_type and license_status. Neither may be empty, and the import script rejects a non-placeholder item that has no source reference. The allowed source types are:

We do not run crawlers that copy jokes from other sites, and no such script exists in this project.

  • public_domain — old enough to be out of copyright, or released under a public-domain dedication.
  • open_license — used under a licence that allows reuse; the licence is recorded with the item.
  • user submissions — published only with the submitter's recorded permission (see Terms).
  • heard from others / interview — told to us directly; credited to the teller if they agree.
  • editorial_placeholder — written by the project team and not yet backed by a real source. Public pages currently contain none; the publish check requires the count to be zero before public mode can be enabled. These never appear in public mode: a release check fails while any remain, so the gate is a script, not a promise.

Copyright and takedown

Jokes are older than any website and we do not claim to own them. What belongs to the project is the site itself: the code, the design and the editorial notes.

If something here is yours and you would rather it were not, tell us. We remove the item from public view, set its licence status to taken_down, and then look into it. That order is deliberate: the site is the last place that should be fighting for the benefit of the doubt.

The takedown page records the request and a way to reach you so we can follow up; until it is resolved, the item stays down.

Who runs it

GlobeJoke is an independent project, not a company with a support desk. One small team writes the editorial notes, checks sources and answers the mail.
